LA Pride Readies With Entertainers and TLGB Education

3 Jun

LA Pride is already in full swing with events that commenced on Harvey Milk Day, May 22nd. This year’s featured events from June 6-8, LA Pride will be a TLGB celebration, as Christopher Street West officials look to highlight the “trials, plights and challenges” of the transgender community, consultant Sam Borelli said.

“The least we can do is put the ‘T’ first and let people know that there are hate crimes happening in this community,” he said, referencing the Transgender Day of Remembrance and the hundreds of transgender people who are killed through violence annually. “You have to take it into your heart.”

While education and awareness are major components of LA Pride, the event is also known for its entertainment and fun. On Friday June 6, it is Women’s night with free entertainment. Mary Lambert, Betty Who, Z LaLa, Monogem and Marley Munroe will perform. On Saturday June 7, Azealia Banks, Jennifer Hudson, Katja Glieson, Kingdoms, Jeremy Thurber, Lunden Reign, Charmaine, The Freaky Boiz and KORR-A will hit the stage. On Sunday June 8, the parade begins at 11 a.m. with grand marshal Demi Lovato. Danity Kane, The Bangles, Kristinia DeBarge, Derek Jameson, Glass Battles, Teammate and Ryan Cassata will entertain the Sunday crowds. Deborah Cox and Marisela will headline the Latino Carnival stage.

Karmin Highlights 15th Annual Pride Night at California’s Great America

24 May

California’s Great America celebrated the 15th anniversary of Pride Night on Friday, May 23rd, kicking off Pride Month for the Bay Area. The event brought out thousands in the Santa Jose, Santa Clara, and nearby areas for a night of LGBT fun with various entertainment acts.

Pop duo Karmin, which has struck platinum and recorded two #1 dance hits, including Brokenhearted and Hello, rocked the main stage. The duo has also performed on national television for Ellen DeGeneres and Saturday Night Live.

E! network star Ross Mathews, star of the hit show Hello Ross served as Master of Ceremonies. Mathews, the former Tonight Show with Jay Leno intern, is also the best-selling author of Man Up: Tales of My Delusional Self-Confidence.

“We are proud to have hosted Pride Night for 15 years, an event that has become a tradition in the Bay Area, and is reflective of its diversity,” said California’s Great America Vice President and General Manager Raul Rehnborg.

“It’s such an honor to be a part of both LA and NYC PRIDE celebrations this year,” says Lovato. “I have been an active advocate of the LGBT community and am wholly committed to supporting individuality and being comfortable in one’s own skin. I am thrilled to be a part of both events as they are a wonderful celebration of independence and self-confidence.”

Long Beach Pride Draws 80,000

18 May

As the second-largest event in the city, the 31st Long Beach Lesbian and Gay Pride Festival and Parade attracted about 80,000 people this weekend. The two-day festival along Shoreline Drive was headlined by former Destiny’s Child member Kelly Rowland, New York hip-hop artist Cazwell, and pop singer Dev.

A lot has changed since the first parade that lasted just 30 minutes, and the two-day festival drew 5,000 people to Palm Island, which was located at the end of Pine Avenue in what is now Shoreline Drive. During the second parade, pride co-founder and president Judi Doyle wore a bulletproof vest after receiving an anonymous, threatening message on the Pride office answering machine.

For many in the crowd, the public’s acceptance of the parade, and of gays and lesbians in general, could not be more evident. The event draws named performers. The city itself is more diverse. The City Council has two members who are out: Vice Mayor Robert Garcia (who is a candidate for Mayor) and Councilwoman Gerrie Schipske.
